Problem 9.6. Mechanism by introducing plastic hinges

The two bay frame is subjected to concentrated loads given in the Figure. Introduce hinges (at least two patterns) to obtain a kinematically admissible mechanism. Give physical justification.

Show explanation

The indeterminancy of the structure is six, however less than seven plastic hinges can result in a mechanism as it is shown in the Figures below.

When the left vertical force is increased, the left beam becomes a mechanism. Plastic hinges can be introduced in two different ways as it is shown in the Figures. Rotation of the middle joint can be ensured by one hinge on the left beam or two hinges on the columns and on the right beam.

Similar arrangements of the plastic hinges are shown on the right beam.

When the horizontal force is increased plastic hinges may develop on the beams or on the columns, see Figures below.

Any of the given solutions results in a mechanism.
